July 22nd: Free the Beaches!!

Waking up, I was SO excited to go sit out on our balcony and be able to make a morning cup of tea :). We were both content just hanging out and having cereal until we remembered that our stay included free breakfast at a little cafe down the street, so we headed there.

We were told by many people that Capri and the blue grotto were a must-see if we were going to the Amalfi Coast. All proud of ourselves for thinking ahead, we found and booked an excursion to Capri for the next day, that would take us to see the white, green and blue grottos and let us swim around in them! Feeling so accomplished and excited for our day trip, we decided to spend the rest of the day just exploring Sorrento (aka shopping :) and hanging out at the beach. Unfortunately the beach part was not so easy. Laying on the beach is not free (I don’t count the 30sq ft. public beach that literally had no standing room...). They cram so many lounge chairs on the beach that there is no space for you to just lay on the sand.... and then they charge you $10euros per chair.  Declaring that water should be free, we left in protest, deciding to go off on a hunt for the smaller beach that was marked on our map, in hopes that it would be free.
so many chairs...

We had no idea what this was... it was a bug... but it was also a very miniature hummingbird. It kept our attention for awhile.

A short snack stop and funny hiccups later, we found our beach! Although they still had chairs, we managed to find a small area off to the side where we could lay our towels. We relaxed, people watched, and swam until the sun started to go behind the mountains.

Tonight was declared a date night. All dressed up, we went to a restaurant we had passed by earlier in the middle of town that had live music and seemed to be quite popular. On the way, I wanted to get a picture of us all dressed up. We had to ask someone to take a picture multiple times (because I’m never happy with the pictures people take... I’m not that picky I swear! Some people are just awful at taking pictures!) This is how we met a couple from New York. After exchanging picture-taking, we stood and chatted to them for quite awhile, learning all about there trip and telling them all about ours.

Our restaurant was a great pick. We loved our food and even our expensive Cokes were all fancy! The whole area around us was very lively and there was a guy singing opera during our meal. We chatted with the British couple sitting next to us so much that it pretty much turned into a double date. (the tables at restaurants in Italy are SO close together, it’s almost more awkward to NOT talk to your neighbor).

To end the night, we walked over to a scenic spot that overlooked the water. It just so happened that when we got there, fireworks started going off over the water a little ways down the coastline, and we had a perfect view of it!.... Sorry Nick, the booming was not dueling wizards ;)
