July 28th: How Come They Sat Us Way Over Here?...

Breakfast in Austria isn’t much different then what we have been eating. Assorted meats and cheeses, bread, yogurt and cereal. Standard. There has however been an increase in pesky flies that dive-bomb your food, and your face.

Heading out of town, we ran into a shop that had huge creepy wooden masks hanging outside, so we decided to stop and check it out. The guy was carving masks when we walked in and stopped to show us around, although we didn’t understand each other at all. We both tried to communicate with each other, but there was a big disconnect. Kind of awkward. But he still showed us some really cool stuff! And showed us a book of full costumes that he has put together. It was really pretty amazing.

We stopped at Spar (our go-to grocery store) to pick up snacks for the road.

"Jen! Go stick you're head in the flowers!... Be a sunflower!"

Our current location is Maria Alm (45min south of Salzburg) where we have a condo for a week! Yay for not having to drive or move for awhile! I think the highlight of our journey there was seeing a huge Chinese restaurant on the way into town!! International food DOES exist!!

Maria Alm is very picturesque. We are surrounded by mountains. The town has a Leavenworth feel to it (which I suppose is props to Leavenworth!). Everything is within walking distance. Very peaceful. We went for a short run when we got there and were distracted by four boys outside practicing a routine with whips!! It made loud cracking noises (so I guess it wasn’t so peaceful then) and was all in rhythm. That was pretty cool.

Chinese food got dismissed when we saw a sign that said our own hotel was serving bbq. When we walked in, we couldn’t understand what the host was asking us. After several repeats, we finally picked up “a la carte”, but still couldn’t understand the rest. Frustrated, he grabbed another waiter to try and explain, but we couldn’t understand him either. Finally, just taking a guess, we described that we wanted the bbq buffet. Unfortunately, by the time that was communicated, we were already on their dislike list. Thus we were shunned to the opposite side of the room from where everyone else was sitting. Despite the awkwardness with our server, the food was good and we completely overate.
